Staying hydrated will make it easier for your technician to draw your blood. Make sure you wear something that allows your forearm — preferably up to the elbow — to be easily accessible for the technician to draw blood from. The technician will call you back and have you sit down in a chair. It will only take them a minute to draw the blood into a small vial. You may have a small bruise for up to a week. Relaxing during the procedure as much as possible will prevent your muscles from tensing, which can cause pain during a blood draw.
The blood sample will later be processed by a machine. While it only takes a few hours to process the sample, it may take several days to get the results from your doctor. There are very few risks to having an SGOT test.
If you feel light-headed or faint following the procedure, let the technicians know. If the results of your SGOT test are high, that means one of the organs or muscles containing the enzyme could be damaged.
These include your liver, but also the muscles, heart, brain, and kidneys. Your doctor may order follow-up tests to rule out another diagnosis. The normal range of an SGOT test is generally between 8 and 45 units per liter of serum. In general, men may naturally have higher amounts of AST in the blood. A score above 50 for men and 45 for women is high and may indicate damage. There may be some variation in the normal ranges depending on the technique the lab used. The exact range of the lab will be listed in the report of the results.
Also, your doctor will evaluate your results based on your health and other factors. This means that a value that falls outside the normal values listed here may still be normal for you or your lab. A blood test is when a sample of blood is taken from the body to be tested in a lab. Doctors order blood tests to check things such as the levels of glucose, hemoglobin, or white blood cells.
This can help them detect problems like a disease or medical condition. Sometimes, blood tests can help them see how well an organ such as the liver or kidneys is working. AST is one of the enzymes that help the liver convert food into energy. High levels of these enzymes can be a sign that the liver is injured or irritated, and the enzymes are leaking out of the liver cells. An AST test may be done if a child has signs of a possible liver problem, such as jaundice yellowish skin or eyes , dark urine, nausea, vomiting , or belly pain.
It also might be done if a child is on medicine that makes high liver enzyme levels more likely. A technician will seat the person in a chair and tie an elastic band around their arm.
The technician will then examine the arm for a suitable vein. After finding the vein, they will clean the site with an alcohol swab. The technician will then insert a small needle into the vein and draw blood. The draw will not take long, only a couple of minutes. When a vial has filled with blood, the technician will remove the needle and instruct the person to hold a gauze against the site of the insertion.
The technician will remove the elastic band and secure the gauze with medical tape. Because the SGOT test is straightforward, no special preparation is necessary. However, a person can take steps to ensure that the test goes smoothly. Avoid over-the-counter medications, including pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, for 2 days before the SGOT test.
If the test is performed without notice, a person should let their doctor know that they have recently taken over-the-counter medication. Stay hydrated before any blood test. Drinking plenty of water on the day of the test can make blood easier to draw. A person is less likely to feel faint if they are well hydrated. Bleeding and bruising at the site are normally very minor and tend to resolve on their own.
A doctor will often order tests that coincide with the SGOT test or follow it.
